Ways to Use DIY Projects to Save on Birthday Parties

My oldest daughter wanted to Have a Mermaid themed Birthday Party one ye4ar. I started looking at party decorations and items to purchase for the event, when I came to this conclusion.

How to Use DIY Projects to Cut cost at your Child's Birthday party

One, chain retail stores are killing it on revenue from party supplies and probably quadrupling the actual item cost. Two, I am not an artist but I can follow directions well enough to save a TON of money on party decorations!

Some items we made ourselves for my daughters Mermaid Themed Birthday Party:

Note: some links are Affiliate links which means if you purchase an item through my link I will receive pa commission based fee off said products at NO CHARGE to you! So thank you for that.  I only promote products and services I completely trust and use myself!

  • the “mermaids enter here” sign

This was so simple, my husband literally cut four pieces of wood and made one a ‘sign holder’ the other three were cut the same size. We nailed the three onto the sign holder piece with the middle piece a slight bit further out then the outer two. I painted the background a mix of blue and pink with silver glitter. When that dried I stenciled in the letters, and I hot glued some shells onto it.

– party favors

I went to my local craft store and purchased pink, purple, and blue necklace cord for really cheap like this:

I had plenty of shells around the house from trips to the beach. I took a bunch of the shells and basically made a mess with paint, but I just rubbed them all around in pink and blue paint. It made a really pretty mermaid looking color. Then I sprayed them with glitter glaze which leaves a hard cover over them. After that I took my husband’s drill and a very small drill bit and made a small hole in the top of the shells. The shells I didn’t paint pink and blue, I just sprayed with the glitter glaze so it was a pretty off white color. I took the cord and made some necklaces and some bracelets for the party bags.

If you don’t have any shells they have plenty at Wal-Mart for really good prices

I took another batch of shells and hot glued small pearl beads into the middle of them so they looked like pearl clams and sprayed them with the glaze as well.

– table centerpieces

I don’t know about anyone else, but I always seem to have alot of unused vases. Like flower vases, so I took those and sprayed the outside with spray glue and then sprinkled different glitter colors on each of them. I filled them up with small round “rocks” that I found on sale at my local Michael’s which only cost me about $2. They were adorable!

– party activities

For one of the party activities my daughter wanted a treasure hunt, so we found a cheap chest that we decorated with, yep you guessed it glitter again. We filled it with sand and put some change from our spare change drawer, some of the shells with pearls on them and a few other items we purchased at the dollar tree. It was a hit!

– my daughters outfit

Now this wasn’t DIY but it was so, so cheap! I purchased it off of Ebay, just typed in kid mermaid costume and I found it so quick. It cost me less than $10

– themed tableware

We used a $1 white tablecloth with all the table decorations we hand made we didn’t need a custom tablecloth.

I printed off mermaids pictures from Pinterest and put some in frames to hang around the room. I also printed off cupcake toppers and  glued them onto cardstock to make it thicker. I printed off the small mermaid designs to place onto the cups as well. For the napkins and plates we bought plain baby blue and a light purple color.

Find everything you could ever need at ANY mermaid birthday party

( An alternative that’s only a little more costly are the pre made mermaid themed party items from Wal-Mart)

With all the colors and glitter thrown in, the party looked awesome! My daughter loved it and it was a very stressfree event overall!!

How to Host a Awesome yet Cheap Birthday Party!

So obviously we all have kids that are all unique,  all of them different from one another in some way! I bet we can relate on atleast one thing: their birthdays.

Yep, that one special day where everything should be about them right? It must be exactly right and perfect, or else we have failed as mothers.

I know that’s how some of you feel, heck I’ve felt like that myself a few times!I won’t lie! I’ve saw parents who throw outrageous parties for their kids! I mean take reserving 3-4 HUGE inflatables for a ONE year old who can’t even get on them yet! Thats uncalled for to me.

Then there are parents who host gift free parties, I think I would feel horrible if I went this route. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for teaching gratitude and being content with what you already have. I just don’t believe I’d feel quite right not giving my child ANYTHING on their birthdays, not until they were older anyway.

Regardless if we are tight on money or if we have plenty, we could always use a go to for hosting a awesome and cheap(er) birthday party for our kids!

– Plan Ahead

Try to plan ahead of time, this will give you longer time to save up money and you’ll have longer time to be able to create some projects on your own. Also if you plan far enough ahead, some items may be on sale such as party decorations that you can grab at anytime and use later. I know at our local Wal-Mart I purchased several of these cake decorating pens(see below), because they were on clearance for only 50 cents and I saved them for when we baked a fathers day cake for my husband!

– Browse Pinterest and other search engines to find ideas for themes, diy decor, supplies, and activities (trust me you’ll find PLENTY)

– Try and Plan to make as many decorations and set up as manu DIY activities you can see my post from my daughters mermaid themed party where we DIY’ed as much as we could!

– Create a checklist for all the items you need to purchase and set up!

– Choose a location like either that HUGE back yard you have or have it at the park. Another option is some church rent out their fellowship halls or our town has a community center alot of kids have hosted their parties at. The range for that is usually between  $30-50 versus the $200+ for say like a water park or smaller themepark.

– Don’t go overboard with the decorations! The kids truly don’t care about them anyway! Make the main entrance area cute and themed and the rest is a breeze! Grab a few cheap packs of balloons and your good to go for most kids!

–  Keep the activities simple. You don’t have to reserve some massive inflatable waterside or pay a few hundred dollars for a dressed up woman to come pretend to be a Disney princess. See this cute treasure chest game we played at my daughters mermaid theme party HERE

– take your own pictures or ask a relative or friend to take shots for you! In my opinion hiring a professional is not needed! I can get cute images without costing a huge fortune and if you need a backdrop but don’t want to try your hand at DIY,  check these cool yet affordable ones out!

$15.00 Customizable

Fringe Backdrop $7.19

Or plenty more HERE!!

– make foods that are easy & quick. There is no need to order catering in my opinion, for a kids party. Make some hot dogs and burgers, you can get these items for cheap and in bulk! Make koolaid for drink! Bake your own cake or cupcakes too!

If you follow these tips along with trying to stay as stressfree as possible, your child’s party will be a success! Remember kids don’t care about the money and decorations, they care about you being happy at their party oohing and ahhing at every gift they open and clapping with a huge smile when they blow out all their candles!

So breathe, relax and have fun momma! They are only this age ONE TIME!

Combined Kids Birthday Parties, a Success or Disaster?

You probably all know I have 3 kids, two being little girls. Well did you also know that both my girls were born in March? Matter of fact only 1 day is between them! March 29 is my oldest girls birthday and March 31 is my baby’s birthday!

Note: some links are Affliate links which means if you purchase an item through my link I will recieve a commission based fee off said products at NO CHARGE to you! So thank you for that.  I only promote products and services I completely trust and use myself!

Crazy,  huh??

It was defiantly crazy for me, especially since both of their due dates fell in the first week’s of April and I was told they may even end up a couple days before on my birthday,  which is April 10th!

When Paislee, my baby turned, one we did a bigger party together at a place that had inside inflatables and smaller arcade games. It was a hit, and both of them enjoyed it!

Last year, we had a party planned but unfortunately their birthdays ALWAYS fall either at the beginning or end of Spring Break. Along with Spring Break, it’s ball time and almost every one always has plans every weekend near their special days!

Since the only day we could reserve the place they wanted, was a day no-one could make it due to plans being already made, we ended up not having a party at all. We did several little things, but no big party.

So, today I’m going to offer several options for having sisters’ birthday parties together and separate. Including, the pros & cons of both ways.

Having Siblings Birthday Parties Together

PROS:

– less stressful only planning one party

– speaking on the party itself only less expensive because you only have one location to rent, one set of party supplies, and usually one set of invitations

– less worrying about guest showing up for the party, since they only have one to come to it’ll be easier for them to be able to plan ahead for

CONS:

– less one on one attention for each sibling (daughter in my case)

– could end up being more expensive having to buy both presents at once depending on what you buy

– deciding on a theme the kids agree on or event for the party(if at, for example, a themepark or something similar)

– for my situation a con since their age is so different, some of my older daughters guest might not want to purchase gifts for my baby girl (since they don’t even know her,) which presents the problem of one kid getting more presents and one getting less

Having Siblings Birthdays that are Really Close in Dates Parties Separate

PROS:

– each kid will recieve the full attention on their day at their party

– no problems with having to get two kids to agree on themes and what to do at the party

– could be cheaper only having to buy one present at a time (again, depending on the cost of the gift)

CONS:

– trying to get guests to come to two separate parties really close in dates

– more expensive having to pay for two separate locations at two separate places

– having to pay for two different sets of decor for two different parties along with food and drinks and even more so if you buy party favors for both parties

Theme Ideas for Having Two Siblings Birthday Parties Together

for a boy and girl combined birthday party

you could use a pirate and mermaid theme like the one below! Super cute and both kids will love having their own roles at the party

Roller Skate Party is perfect for a combined boy/girl party

Bowling is a simple yet awesome way to combine two kids parties into one!

for two girls that are different in age

Princess’s:all girls love princess and they could make it their own by being able to choose which princess they want!

Frozen: this would work for sisters unless they both favor one of the characters over the other

Mermaids is a great girl party, even at different ages!

for two boys combined birthday party

ninja turtles and Pokemon (see just about anything can be combined)

Racing car joint boy party is a fun way to combine competitive boys.

Ideas for the Cheapest Way to Have Siblings with Close Birthdays, Parties Separately

– have the party at a park where it doesn’t cost to go

– have smaller kids parties at home, keep it simple and easy. Invite mostly family only.

– make the decorations and don’t buy the character plates and napkins, instead opt for the printable stickers of the theme your child choose and stick/glue the printed logo onto the plain party cups and plates, it’s so much cheaper!

I’m not sure what we will do this year. Although, the girls have toyed with the idea of doing a Unicorn Theme!

So how about you?

Do any of y’all have kids birthdays so close together? Do you do parties together or separate? Is it a good experience for you or more negative?

Have any other awesome combine theme ideas or suggestions? Maybe you’ve hosted or attended a cool combined party, I’d love to hear your thought and comments!
